Chapter 8: Callie

Birthdays should be abolished after age twenty.

I know most people wouldn’t be sympathetic. I complained about feeling old to my mother this morning when she called me up to wish me happy birthday, and she said, and I quote, “Please, Callie. You’re only twenty-five! Cry me a river.”

It feels unbearably old at this moment though. My early twenties are gone. And I have to wonder if I used the time to its fullest. I have been in my twenties for five years, and I have spent all of those five years in school. Yes, I bummed around Europe during the summer between college and law school, but so what? I should have spent a year bumming around Europe. Or bumming around Asia. Or doing something amazing that didn’t involve cracking open books and studying.

Well, I’ve only got one year left of law school. And then I’m going to do something amazing.

Old Denty gives me his birthday present, which is the rare gift of not breaking down during the trip from the campus library to my apartment. Thanks, Denty. That meant a lot to me.

I trudge up the two flights of stairs to my apartment, my taxation book and my civil procedure books tucked under my right arm. These books are damn heavy. I wouldn’t mind an elevator right around now. But then again, I’ll be spending more time at Dean’s apartment now, and he’s got an elevator.

Maybe there will come a time when I’ll be spending all my time at his apartment. Maybe soon.

But no, I’m getting ahead of myself. We’ve only been together for three months. Even if they’ve been three really, really great months, and I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone I’ve liked as much as I like him. I can only hope he feels the same way.

The books are slipping through my fingers when I get to the top of the stairs. I fumble for the keys and manage to somehow get the door open without dropping them. I flick on the light, and then about ten people yell, “Surprise!”

Oh God, I hate surprise parties.

“Are you surprised?” Rhea asks hopefully, as I blink my eyes to adjust to the brightness. “Did you have any idea?”

I dump my books on the coffee table. “No,” I say regretfully. I wish I’d guessed what Rhea was doing. I’ve been so busy studying and hanging out with Dean, it got right past me.

“So you’re totally surprised?”

“Yes, totally.”

Rhea squeals with happiness and throws her arms around me. “Happy birthday, Callie.”

“Thanks,” I mumble.

I look around our tiny living room. There are about ten students from our class squeezed into the tiny space, either standing in the center of the room or perched on our ratty sofa. Every single one of them is holding some sort of alcoholic beverage.

I need one of those. Somebody beer me, please.

“What about Dean?” I say to Rhea.

She takes a swig of whatever is in her plastic cup. “Huh?”

“You told him about the party, right?”

She rolls her eyes.
